The story of
Dreamgirls
opens backstage at the famed Apollo Theatre in the 1960s, and
closes decades later in Chicago. In between we follow the fortunes of the
Dreams, a struggling R&B “girls group,” and in particular the spectacularly
talented Effie. Despite heartbreaks and challenges, the group’s perseverance
leads them to break new ground, both professionally and socially.
Dreamgirls
is
not just a glimpse into the backstage lives of the characters, but a glimpse into
the backstage world of the music industry as well.
